“I would like my sword back.”

Cedric McKellan didn’t expect to be taken prisoner on this assignment, but so far, his track record with the Knights Templar had not been the best. He had catastrophically failed his first assignment, getting one of his comrades killed and sparing the life of someone that should have been an enemy. This second assignment was not faring much better. He was supposed to be getting answers and stopping the killings. He might get some answers, but it seemed like he would just be yet another one in the series of murders. He wondered what part of his body would be where they would carve that symbol that they loved so much.

The leader of the Dracule Bloodline waved the gleaming sword in front of him, obviously trying to taunt him. “No. I do not think that it would be a smart move to give my prisoner his weapon back. That sounds like an easy way to get myself killed, and I like living. I like it a lot.”

“What are you worried about? It’s not like my sword would be able to do anything to an immortal monster like you, eh? So, you have nothing to fear.”

Mikael let out a loud bellow of laughter. “What is it with you people? You all just assume that I am a vampire without much evidence of such.”

“I don’t actually believe it,” Cedric said. He really didn’t, but he figured he would humor the notion given the boarded-up windows that were keeping the sun from shining into the room. “But it is nice to know that that probably is not the case. That makes my job here much easier if I don’t have to become a vampire slayer.”

“Your job?”

“Yes, my job. I was investigating those murders you and your cult committed to see if there was anything supernatural about them. The prevailing theory was that you were real-life vampires. But, I highly doubted that. I have seen some things that science could never explain, but vampires seemed far-fetched.”

“They are not far-fetched. I am just not one of them. But there was one man who was. Vlad Tepes, better known as Vlad the Impaler.”

Cedric thought—or maybe hoped—that he misheard him for a moment. It sure sounded like this man really believed in vampires. Not only that, but he was part of a cult that worshipped the historical figure that he now claimed was a vampire. If they really believed that Vlad was a real-life Dracula, then it was no wonder that a creepy, misguided blood worshipping cult had formed in honor of him.

“You think Vlad the Impaler was an actual vampire?”

“We know he was,” Mikael said. “And most of the world does too. They just write it off as being a fun...what do you call it...ah, yes, a fun quirk. They like to play with the idea that Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel was just conjecture and his connection with Vlad the Impaler was just a little piece of trivia and not based on any fact.
